Study skills for kids: how to overcome procrastination

Hey kids, in this ‘Study Skills’ series of videos, we’re going to learn, step-by-step, the best approaches to become a studying powerhouse.

The sixth step towards this goal is tackling one of the greatest – if not ‘the’ greatest – of roadblocks to effective studying… procrastination. In other words, putting off beginning the task as long as we can.

Here, Crash Course YouTube channel host Thomas Frank explains the key factors behind procrastination, which include:

  • Expectancy – i.e. how strongly you believe you’re able to complete the task
  • Value – i.e. the reward(s) for completing the task, and how pleasant or unpleasant the process is
  • Impulsiveness – i.e. how susceptible you are to distractions and impulses to do other things
  • Delay – i.e. the likely time between beginning the task and receiving its reward

Once your unique procrastination pattern is analysed in terms of these factors, specific strategies can be applied to address each, which are then covered in the rest of the video.
