Cyprus-Armenian Friendship Park opens in Nicosia

House president Annita Demetriou on Wednesday sent out a message for the peaceful coexistence of all communities on the island during the inauguration of the Cyprus-Armenian Friendship Park in Nicosia.

Demetriou inaugurated the park, located at the junction of Armenias Street and Limassol Avenue near the Melkonian school, in the presence of Armenian Representative in parliament, Vartkes Mahdessian.

Also present were Strovolos mayor Andreas Papacharalambous, Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides, Archbishop of the Armenian Church of Cyprus Khoren Doghramadjian and a representative of the Church of Cyprus, among others.

This park, Demetriou said, highlights the historical depth of the presence of the Armenian community in Cyprus and the strong ties between the two communities.

“The friendship that binds our peoples has very deep roots. It has been forged and tested over the centuries and has been sealed through sacred goals and struggles for our survival,” Demetriou said.

“So let us take from the inauguration of this park the message of the importance of peaceful coexistence. For Cyprus and the future the younger generations deserve, where every young man and woman in Cyprus, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latin community, can dream and create in conditions of peace and prosperity,” she added.

Demetriou said that Cyprus will continue to offer its full support on every issue that concerns “the brotherly people of Armenia” and to express in every way solidarity with the sufferings brought to it by war.
