Cyprus is the 64th-most peaceful country on Earth, according to this year’s ‘Global Peace Index’, up one place from last year.

The index, which is released yearly, is compiled by Australian charity the Institute for Economics and Peace. It measures the state of peace across three domains, namely the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarisation in a country.

In 64th place, Cyprus is ranked as the second-least peaceful European Union member state, ahead of only France, which is ranked 67th.

Greece was placed 60th in this year’s rankings, while Turkey was placed in a lowly 147th.

Iceland topped the rankings, with Denmark in second place and Ireland in third. The three lowest-ranked countries are Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan.
