Gunes Onar was on Tuesday named as Ersin Tatar’s special representative, replacing the retiring Ergun Olgun.

Onar previously worked as Dervis Eroglu’s director of political affairs and undersecretary of the north’s ‘foreign ministry’ under Kudret Ozersay between 2018 and 2021.

His most recent post was as coordinator of Tatar’s confidence-building measures and bilateral technical committees.

Olgun had announced his retirement back in July, saying “I am 80 years old, I don’t know how long I have left to live, and I want to spend more time with my family.”

Tatar had appointed him a month after his election as Turkish Cypriot leader.
