matria

Larnaca is set to captivate residents and visitors once again with the continuation of free film nights. Every Monday evening, films from the world cinema scene will screen at the Skala Municipal Theatre as the Larnaca Cinema Society continues its initiative. In January, cinephiles will get to enjoy three films – French, Belgian and Spanish productions.

On Monday, the film The Taste of Things will be screened, a 2023 production about cook Eugenie and her boss Dodin who grow fond of one another over 20 years. Their romance gives rise to dishes that impress even the world’s most illustrious chefs and when Dodin is faced with Eugenie’s reluctance to commit, he begins to cook for her. The film stars Juliette Binoche, Benoît Magimel and Emmanuel Salinger and won five awards at international film festivals. Screened in its original language (French), the film will include subtitles in Greek.

The following film will be the French Love According to Dalva which touches on underage sexual abuse and a girl’s twisted desire to grow up. The film won the Audience Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival and the FIPRESCI Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Screened on January 22, it follows 12-year-old Dalva who dresses and acts like a woman and lives with her father. When he is arrested for abusing her, she is moved into foster care, in denial about the charges against her father.

The final January film screening is a 2023 Spanish social drama Matria shot in Galician. The story is set in a Galician fishing village in Spain, following the life of a woman struggling to get through with hard work. She is trapped in an unhappy marriage, is a mother to a 17-year-old girl and works in a fish factory. When changes at the factory force her to rethink her employment, she begins taking care of an elderly man who recently lost his wife.

The Monday night screenings will continue through February, March and April.
