Authorities on Wednesday confirmed that a 22-year-old pregnant woman has been intubated after presenting pneumonia from Covid-19.

The woman, who is on her 20th week of gestation, is at the Nicosia general hospital. She was intubated on Tuesday.

Dr Agathoklis Christofides, head of the Makarios hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology clinic, told state broadcaster CyBC that they are also monitoring the foetus’ condition. The 22-year-old was transferred to the Nicosia general hospital because the Makarios hospital does not have a suitable intensive care unit.

He said priority was the mother’s health and then the baby’s, expressing hope that both will be able to overcome this situation.

Christofides said they have two more pregnant women with Covid-19 treated at the Makarios hospital.

He dismissed reports that the Covid vaccines affect the fertility of men or women and urged young people to get vaccinated arguing that the virus affects them as well.
