Two arrests after man tries to travel on someone else’s ID

Paphos airport

Two people who arrived at Paphos airport with the intent to travel were arrested on Sunday night in connection with a case of forgery and conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor.

According to a police statement, shortly after 7pm, a 27-year-old man, legally residing in Cyprus, showed up at Paphos airport to travel to another European country.

During passport control, he presented an EU ID card, however, suspicions were raised that the photo showed a different man. Further examination revealed the identity card to be genuine, however during questioning the 27-year-old admitted his true details.

A second 65-year-old man, suspected to be involved in the case, had been seen earlier at the airport with the 27-year-old.

The travel documents presented by the 65-year-old were checked and found to be genuine, however, when interrogated he said the ID card presented by the 27-year-old in fact belonged to his 35-year-old son, who lives overseas.

The 65-year-old denied any connection to the 27-year-old, claiming ignorance of how his son’s ID card came to be in the younger man’s possession.

Court arrest warrants were issued for the two suspects, who were detained pending ongoing investigations.
