Flamingos flock to Larnaca salt lake (photos)

After heavy rains battered the island over the weekend, a large number of flamingos were spotted at Larnaca’s salt lake.

These were caught on camera by Cyprus Mail photographer Christos Theodorides.

Every year, thousands of flamingos flock to Cyprus’s salt lakes of Larnaca and Akrotiri in the winter in search of warmer climes, and food.

Environmental authorities have urged the public not to approach the birds in their natural habitat, nor fly drones above them, as they might get agitated.

Larnaca salt lake is located just off the main road to Larnaca airport and is easily accessible from the city through a park area. There are paths, benches, and observation decks along the lake’s banks.
