The Empire State Building will be powered entirely by wind

New York’s iconic Empire State Building, which has towered over Midtown Manhattan since the early Thirties, is set to be powered completely by renewable energy.

Empire State Realty Trust (ESRT) confirmed this week that it had struck a three-year contract with Green Mountain Energy to power its entire commercial real estate portfolio with renewable wind electricity.

ESRT controls over 10.1 million square feet of real estate, all of which will be powered by renewable energy for the next three years. This switch will prevent about 450 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere – roughly equivalent to every New York State household turning off all their lights for an entire month.
