Nicosia has given its consent to the appointment of Canadian Colin Stewart as the new UNSG special representative in Cyprus, reports said on Sunday.

The Cyprus News Agency, citing diplomatic sources, reports that Nicosia has agreed to the appointment of Stewart as the new special representative of the UN secretary-general (UNSG) in Cyprus, to replace outgoing Unficyp head and Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar. Stewart previously served as the UNSG’s Special Representative for Western Sahara and Head of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

President Nicos Anastasiades is expected to brief the members of the National Council on Monday morning about the developments following his contacts in New York.

Government spokesman, Marios Pelekanos, told CNA the president will inform the members of the National Council about the developments in the Cyprus issue following their last session. He is to brief them about his meeting in New York with UNSG Antonio Guterres, as well as the informal tripartite meeting with Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

Information is to also be provided on what has been discussed and agreed upon regarding the appointment of a UNSG envoy for the Cyprus issue.
