Woman dies after drunk driver crashes into car (Update)

A 35-year-old man was remanded for six days on Wednesday, after a violent car crash that caused the death of the 62-year-old driver he collided with.

Limassol traffic police deputy said that high speed and driving under the influence of alcohol seem to be the main causes of the accident, but police are also looking into reports that the man had sped past a red traffic light.

The driver appeared to be twice over the legal alcohol limit and was arrested at the scene. He was brought before Limassol district court on Wednesday morning, which ordered he be remanded in custody for six days.

The car accident happened at around 1am, on Limassol’s coastal front, near Germasogia.

Under conditions that are still being investigated, the 35-year-old who was driving a saloon car, crashed into an SUV that the 62-year-old woman was driving.

The fire department extracted the woman from the car, who was pronounced dead upon arrival to Limassol general hospital. The woman was from Hungary and working in Cyprus.

The driver, from Russia, was unharmed while the passenger in his vehicle was slightly injured. She received treatment at a private clinic and was later allowed to go.

An initial alcotest indicated 58 μg of alcohol while a follow-up was 47μg. The legal limit is 22μg.
