Fifty duty-free cartons of cigarettes containing 200 cigarettes each, and 24 kilos of rolling tobacco were confiscated at Paphos airport, the department of customs said on Tuesday.

According to a statement, on Monday customs officers found the tobacco products in two pieces of luggage heading to the UK.

The products had been smuggled from the north, and did not contain the required health disclaimers in Greek or Turkish, nor did they carry the safety features and identification barcode for traceability, indications that they were duty-free.

The passenger was arrested, and subsequently released after his request for an out-of-court settlement of the case with the payment of €15,000 was approved.
