Cyprus hit by intense weather for second day (updated, photos)

Cyprus was hit by hailstorms and intense rain for a second day on Tuesday, causing road closures and some power outages.

Hail was reported at the entrance to the Nicosia district coming from Larnaca and Limassol, causing delays in traffic.

Police called on drivers to be especially careful as the roads were slippery with limited visibility.

A bridge in Dali on Nea Ledras Street had to be closed due to flooding. It was reopened later in the afternoon.

Coastal roads in Kivisili and Mazotos were also closed from 1.30 pm due to flooding from the rains.

Power outages were recorded in Limassol, Larnaca, and Nicosia, with the worst being in the capital.

The met office yellow weather warning will be in effect until 6pm on Tuesday.

The Fire Service responded to a total of 30 calls in the Nicosia district, according to spokesman Andreas Kettis.

In a post on X, he said firefighters had to pump rainwater from underground spaces and basements, as well as open drains on public roads and tow vehicles from flooded streets with passengers on board.

Severe weather also affected the north, especially the Pentadaktylos area.

As reported in the Turkish Cypriot media, several roads in Kyrenia flooded, while some roads between Lapithos and Karavas were closed to traffic. The Panagra dam also overflowed.

Lightning struck an electricity transformer near Lapithos, causing a fire, requiring the intervention of firefighters.

Turkish Cypriot news outlet Haber Kibris reported that due to the adverse weather conditions, a flight operated by Turkish airline Pegasus that departed from Adana and was due to land at Tymbou airport was forced to return to Turkey after two failed landing attempts.

Another flight operated by Ajet and scheduled to land at Tymbou airport was forced to turn back, as it could not land due to heavy rain and limited visibility.
