Breaking free from TikTok’s grasp

In a recent interview, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew highlighted what it takes to lead the mammoth digital platform that is changing global culture. Chew also discussed the app’s recommendation algorithm, or “discovery engine”, which shows tailor-made content after analysing the user’s behaviour in responses to different content.

TikTok, in essence, reads its users’ minds using mathematics. “The beauty of the product is that it is designed for everyone to be heard,” Chew said. “If you have good content that people enjoy, they will watch your video. It’s not just famous individuals who can expand their visibility on the platform – TikTok gives everyone a voice.”

But what is it about TikTok that has made it the most widely used social media site today? There are several good reasons for this, according to Chew, but simply put, it is an app that allows users to have fun employing all their senses.

TikTok users can express themselves through lip-syncing, dancing, cooking, comedy, and singing on the platform. Users can also create videos and share them on other social media networks.

TikTok became the most downloaded app in the United States two years after its inception in 2016, and as of 2022, it has over 3 billion downloads and over 1 billion active users each month.

TikTok is far less polished than Instagram, Snapchat, or Facebook. It emphasises warped faces and bodies rather than photoshopping to feel attractive – although some users still flaunt their bodies on the platform as if it were an online dating application, or for attention and validation purposes. Even though some individuals take it too seriously, TikTok is still a casual and quick way to express yourself.

On the home front, the level of creativity displayed by certain users on TikTok has no bounds. Several Cypriot TikTok influencers maintain the app allows them to show off their skills – or lack thereof – by exhibiting everything from voice dubs and unique jokes to POV plays. Cypriots have taken to TikTok, whether they are Boomers, Gen Z or anywhere in between, and while our list of influencers is small in contrast to other areas of the world, TikTok has increased in popularity in Cyprus and may be one of the most used social media platforms on the island.

Another aspect of TikTok is its ability to promote brand recognition. Many businesses in Cyprus have seized the opportunity to use the app to expand their consumer base, get recognition in their industry, and stay ahead of their competitors. Another reason for the app’s popularity is the ease with which it can be used to create content, gain followers, and generate activity, as well as the possibility to sell items on TikTok shopping.

However, as with most things in life, there are certain drawbacks or areas of concern, one of which is that TikTok is a powerful time killer. As intriguing and entertaining as TikTok is, it is a time-consuming platform, and users spend a significant amount of time there.

TikTok addiction poses several risks. It may result in fewer in-person social interactions, a rise in online debates and cyberbullying, or even attention-related problems. Users may become diverted from important responsibilities such as work or school projects, because of the app.

Breaking out from the grip of TikTok addiction can be challenging, but it is feasible and manageable. I was able to release that grasp after setting limits for myself around the amount of time I allow for TikTok and the days I use it.

Setting shorter, more attainable goals, such as striking a good balance between doing something useful and utilising TikTok daily, might also be beneficial. If the addiction is unmanageable, you can also delete it from devices or uninstall apps, so you no longer have access when you desire it.

However, I am not suggesting that the cord be severed entirely. TikTok could remain in your life as something enjoyable, if there is a balance. Finding hobbies such as reading books, streaming shows or enjoying Cyprus’ great outdoors will provide mental stimulation rather than obsessing over TikTok; by adjusting your mindset and focusing on things that make you happy, you will divert attention away from being continuously addicted to the platform. After all, a healthy life balance of online engagement and other forms of entertainment will increase your love of life more than before.
