It’s ball season in Vienna as the first months of the year see hundreds of ball-goers and dance fans taking part. Between November and March, there are dozens of types of balls, from the Opera Ball to the Coffee-house Owners’ Ball. Yet the old tradition of carnival balls continues to thrive in Vienna.
Here in Cyprus the professional Artistic Dance Company Fly-in-Dance with the support of the City of Vienna and the Austrian Embassy are bringing a touch of these legendary balls with the 9th Charity Vienna Ball in Cyprus next week.
Held on March 8, this year’s ball coincides with International Women’s Day, thus the 9th Ball will be inspired by and dedicated to celebrating the many achievements of women. The evening will start traditionally with a symphony orchestra accompanying the grand opening by the debutante dance couples. Waltzes, polkas, mazurka, quadrille and gallops will then be played until the early morning.
The Cyprus International Chamber Orchestra will offer live entertainment with conductor Petros Stylianou and Baritone Michael Gavrillove. Artists of Ballet from Russia Elizaveta Chedrina and Anton Maltsev, popular ball dances and master classes from choreographer and director of the Ball Committee in Cyprus Tatiana Zenevich, a candlelit gala dinner and gifts from the Mayor of Vienna are some of the highlights of the programme.
As with every year the Charity chosen to benefit will help children with special needs. This year all funds collected will benefit the Foundation of Children with Special Needs.
“Some people believe that Vienna balls are only for the elite and that a personal invitation is required,” say organisers. However, this is not true. “On the contrary, Vienna balls welcome all, regardless of their social or professional status,” say organisers.
“The Vienna Ball in Cyprus, first held in Nicosia in 2010, is a significant cultural and social event on an international level. Every year we welcome respected businesspersons, politicians, diplomats and representatives from many different countries.”
Children will be able to get a taste of the Vienna Ball in an upcoming dance dedicated solely to them. The 2nd Children’s Vienna Ball is set to take place on March 23 and invites children aged seven to 14 and their families. With this event organisers hope to teach the young generation proper etiquette and techniques of interpersonal relationships. More information on this Ball is coming up in the following weeks so stay tuned.
