Coronavirus: 23 new cases on Monday (Update 2)

Health authorities on Monday announced 23 new coronavirus cases, most concerning travellers arriving during the weekend.

The total number of cases since March has reached 1,847.

Authorities said they had carried out 2,736 tests with the majority at the Republic’s two airports, 1,756, where 10 cases were detected among travellers arriving in the past 48 hours.

Two cases concern individuals from Athens who arrived on Saturday and Sunday; five cases arrived from the UK in four separate flights – East Midlands, Liverpool, London — on Sunday, two from Kiev, also Sunday, and one from Krakow.

Health authorities said five more people were contacts of previously confirmed cases – two were Asil Lysis footballers.

Two other cases were detected after they were referred for testing by their GP. One of them works at the British bases.

Two more were detected by labs at state general hospitals and four after testing at private labs.

Two of the latter are related.

Eight people are currently being treated at Famagusta Covid hospital, three of whom are in the high dependency unit. One more patient is receiving treatment at a different state hospital.

Two are intubated at the Nicosia general hospital ICU.

Turkish Cypriot health authorities announced three new cases on Monday after 2,069 tests.

One of the cases concerned a traveller and the second was a contact of a previously confirmed case. Since March, 775 cases have been recorded in the north.
