Cyprus continues efforts for recognition of Armenian Genocide

We continue the effort for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the international community, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Saturday in a post on twitter, on the occasion of the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.

“Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide. We stand with reverence and pain before their sacrifice. We hold firmly the hand of our Armenian brothers, as we live here together, in our homeland. We are continuing the effort for the recognition of the genocide by the international community,” he said.

American President Joe Biden is likely going to use the word “genocide” as part of a statement on Saturday when annual commemorations for the victims are held around the world, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters this week.

Representative of the Armenian community in the Cyprus House of Representatives Vartkes Mahdessian earlier this week said he was hopeful that Biden would recognise the Armenian genocide.

He told the Cyprus Mail that such a move would be of historic importance – likely leading to many other countries recognising the mass killings as genocide.
