Annual Argonaftis exercise underway

The annual sea, air and land exercise Argonaftis began on Monday in collaboration with the defence, foreign, interior and justice ministries.

The exercise, which will go on until May 23, will be conducted in four phases, in sea, air and land area of Larnaca, in the Nicosia Flight Information Region and Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

It will involve the National Guard, Civil Defence, and police, in cooperation with other government agencies.

Throughout the four-day exercise existing national disaster plans will be tested, including the evacuation of people from neighbouring countries.

The script will also cover asymmetric threats such as terrorism and piracy, and crisis management.

Sections of the exercises will take place at Larnaca port and offshore with day and night manoeuvres

The final phase will take place on May 23 at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari in the presence of the political and military leadership, along with foreign diplomats and observers.
