Cyprus Mail hits Twitter landmark with 30,000 followers

Cyprus Mail has reached 30,000 followers on Twitter, making it the most followed media account on the island by a sizeable margin.

Twitter is one of the most valuable tools in modern journalism as it provides the platform for media companies to keep their audiences up to date with the latest stories and breaking news.

And according to social media analytics site Socialbakers, Cyprus Mail is the pace-setter on the island among its peers. The account handle @cyprusmail is the most followed media channel in Cyprus with 30,027 (as of 30 December), second-placed Sigmalive stands on 24,653 while newspaper Phileleftheros is third with 12,984.

When it comes to the overall standings, Cyprus Mail currently has the eleventh biggest Twitter audience in Cyprus.

However, the statistic of the most followers alone can be deceiving – though a number of accounts in the top ten have a large following, many of those follow thousands of users in a bid to get followers in return.

When it comes to ratio, i.e. the number of followers per people following, Cyprus Mail ranks in fourth spot in the country of accounts with over 20,000 followers with a ratio of 99:1. Tennis star Marcos Baghdatis leads the way (648:1) followed by actress Ada Nicodemou (388:1) and President Nicos Anastasiades (294:1).
