South of Mathiatis, hidden in the pinewoods at the foot of Strongylos hill, is the oldest mine of the area, which will soon come to life again with gold mining and works to restore it.
The mine dates back to 600 BC. It started out as a copper mine but gold was extracted between 1935 and 1945.

Nineteen miners were trapped on Tuesday after a coal mine in southern Turkey collapsed following a flood inside the mine, local media reported.
