The referee whose decisions during a critical top flight football game sparked controversy has received a threatening text message on his mobile phone, it emerged on Tuesday.

Antonis Christodoulou has been accused by Nicosia side Omonia of being biased during Saturday’s fixture against arch rivals APOEL.

Police confirmed they have received a complaint but did not name the referee who lodged it. However, reports said it was Christodoulou, who received a text saying “You’re finished. Do not mess with Omonia.”

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said the force was investigating the complaint and was also taking measures in light of the tension.

Angelides declined to comment on the details of the measures but it is believed they include patrolling certain venues that could become the target of angry fans.

“We urge everyone to tone down the rhetoric for the good of football,” Angelides said.
