Remand after suspected abuse of 3-year-old

By Constantinos Psillides

A three-year old girl is being treated at Makarios children’s hospital after doctors in first aid reported the case to police when they suspected signs of physical abuse, police said.

The girl was taken to hospital at around 5am on Monday by her parents and a family friend.

According to radio reports, the mother returned home from work in the early hours of Monday and found the girl injured. She insisted on taking her to hospital, police said.

According to the report, the girl had multiple bruises on her body.

Police questioned the parents and the family friend on how the girl got her injuries. All three denied any knowledge but failed to convince police investigators.

Both the father and the family friend were taken before Nicosia District Court on Monday and remanded for six days in custody.

They are held under suspicion of domestic violence and causing actual bodily harm.

The child’s mental state will be evaluated by a child-psychologist, a police deputy spokesperson said.
