Dancing in the streets

By Maria Gregoriou

The 12th Summer Dance Festival – Cyprus New Movement of Dance Groups, Dancers and Choreographers – will give everyone in Nicosia and Limassol ten days of dance from Friday.

The site specific festival doesn’t only give dance fans the chance to witness a whole lot of dance moves, it also gives them the opportunity to wander around the town centres of Limassol and Nicosia as the performances will take place in different areas of each city. So by following the sound of the rhythm and the pitter patter of dancing feet, the audience can rediscover some old – and perhaps forgotten – pathways, historical landmarks and buildings revived through the choreographies presented by the participating artists.

A total of nine dance groups will present their new choreographic work at this year’s Summer Dance Festival, a contemporary dance event that is among the most important of the year and one which enhances the cultural scene.

As a site specific festival, the shows that make up its programme derive from the space itself as a creative element in their structure and content.

The choreographers become inspired from a space and create works specifically to be presented within that space. As a result, the viewer is involved in a holistic dance experience, which goes beyond the conventional framework of a traditional theatre or venue.

This year the groups and choreographers who will be participating are: Asomates Dynamis – Machi Dimitriadou Lindahl, Chorotheatro Omada Pende – Roulla Kleovoulou, Petros Konnaris, Aelion – Fotini Perdikaki, .pelma – Lia Charaki, FOR group – Stella Eftychiou, Echo Arts – Arianna Economou, Julia Brendle and Fotis Nicolaou.
