Ayia Napa pair remanded for suspected assault

TWO men aged 22 from Ayia Napa and Xylofagou were remanded on Friday at Famagusta District court for eight days in connection with seriously injuring a 65-year-old earlier in the week.

At around 7.20am on Wednesday, the 65-year-old man was found unconscious and injured about 100 meters from his home. He was found by his wife who had woken up earlier from hearing him yelling.

The man was rushed to Famagusta General hospital and diagnosed with trauma to the jaw and a fracture at the back of his skull. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to Nicosia General hospital where he is being treated and placed on a ventilator.

A witness had come forward with testimony against the two, the court heard, leading to their arrest shortly before midnight on Thursday.

Famagusta police wants to question a 21-year-old barwoman in Ayia Napa to explain what happened at the bar where the victim had gone in the early hours of Wednesday morning for a drink.

Police have so far gathered 11 statements and are expecting another 25.
