The former head of the University of Cyprus’s Economic Research Centre (ERC), Panos Pashardes, passed away on Sunday at the age of 68.
The late professor who acquired his degree in economics at the University of Athens in 1973 and his master’s and PhD at the Birkbeck College of the University of London in 1975 and 1979, joined the University of Cyprus in 1994, according to the ERC website.
Pashardes specialised in consumer behaviour, public, and welfare economics, applied econometrics and the economy of Cyprus, and published dozens of studies academic journals.
While he was a member of the socialist party Edek, his positions on economic policy were considered liberal. He publicly advocated the privatisation of state-owned enterprises such as telecoms company, Cyta, and the overhaul of public sector’s human resource management.
