Municipality criticises strike by rubbish collectors

A decision by union municipal workers to go on a 24-hour strike was unreasonable, Aglandjia municipality said on Friday.

Staff went on strike from Thursday at 7pm to protest the municipal council’s decision to outsource rubbish collection to the private sector.

In a statement, the municipality said the move would allow for a lot of financial savings and that staff working rights would not be affected.

It added that the municipality had asked for the labour ministry’s intervention to put an end to the strike measures.

Unions had stipulated they wanted the municipality to rescind the decision and make other arrangements with the workers.
