Coronavirus: Two deaths, 627 new cases (Updated)

Two deaths from coronavirus and 627 new cases of the disease were announced on Saturday.

The health ministry said the deaths were of an 82-year-old man and a 92-year-old woman. Both had underlying health conditions but died of coronavirus.

The number of patients with coronavirus in state hospitals remains high, with 180 people reported on Saturday evening. Of these, 54 are in serious condition, including 25 who are intubated.

The woman who died was a resident of Ariti rehabilitation centre in Nicosia.

The number of people who have died of coronavirus so far is 129: 86 men and 43 women with an average age of 80.

Of the 12,039 tests carried out, 1,600 were PCR tests and 10,439 were rapid tests.

In total, 409 cases were detected through rapid tests. The rest of the cases were through PCR testing: 135 cases concern contact tracing, and 60 are people who got tested privately.

Two cases were detected during tests at the airports and another five are people who arrived from the UK and were tested on the seventh day of their mandatory quarantine and before leaving the hotel they were taken to on their arrival in Cyprus.

Another 16 were among samples processed at the state hospitals’ labs.

As regards rapid tests, 121 were detected in the Nicosia district, 101 in Larnaca, 117 in Limassol, 25 in Paphos and 36 in the Famagusta district.

Nine cases were detected in nursing homes in the Nicosia district.

The total number of cases since March now stands at 23,445.
