Coronavirus: Two deaths, 559 new cases recorded on Tuesday (updated)

Two deaths and 559 coronavirus cases were announced on Tuesday.

The deaths concern a 74-year-old woman and a man, 62, both with underlying health conditions. Neither of them were vaccinated against Covid-19.

In total 264 people died of coronavirus: 175 men and 89 women.

The new cases were detected among 49,383 PCR and rapid tests, with an overall positivity of 1.13 per cent.

There are 205 people in hospital, of whom 46 are in serious condition. Twenty-one patients are intubated.

The new cases concern 104 people found positive during contact tracing, and 140 people who got tested privately.

Three cases were found among tests carried out at Larnaca and Paphos airports while 10 are people who arrived from the UK and were found positive after getting tested on the seventh day of their quarantine.

Four more cases were among samples processed in state hospital labs and three are people who were referred for testing by their doctors.

Fifteen cases were people who got rapid tests privately.

Another 280 cases were detected among the rapid tests carried out in all districts on behalf of the health ministry. Of these, 40 cases were found in the education sector and two during tests in nursing homes in Paphos.

Among the rest 104 cases were found in the Nicosia district with a positivity rate of 0.80 per cent. In the Limassol district, 67 cases were found (0.74 per cent), 47 in Larnaca (0.90 per cent), 14 in Paphos (0.48 per cent) and six in the Famagusta district (0.35 per cent).

The total number of cases is now 48,837.
