Climate march aims to uproot the System

More than 79 countries are protesting on Saturday to mark the Global Day of Climate Action, including Cyprus. Six local organisations are planning a Climate March in Nicosia called Uproot the System starting from the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry.

“On the 9th of August 2021,” say organisers, “the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest and most worrying report yet; global warming is widespread, is happening faster and its impacts are becoming more intense. In a parallel world, the administrations on both sides of the divide of the island of Cyprus, along with their geopolitical partners, continue a race for control of the Eastern Mediterranean through a promotion of the hydrocarbon explorations programmes. Ignoring the elephant in the room (aka the refusal to prioritise a decarbonisation strategy vis-a-vis the continuation of the hydrocarbon exploration programmes), we watch in awe while deadly wildfires and floods spread across the island.

“At the same time,” they add, “those in power continue with business as usual, and continue financing more military equipment over the protection of nature, quality health care and education. This is the case in the whole region, where outdated geopolitical games over the control of the hydrocarbon reserves ignore the undeniable impacts of decades of pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. On the 25th of September, we join people marching across different geographies for climate action – for a safe future for all.”
