Musicians from far and near perform at Sarah’s Jazz Club

It is an eventful month at Nicosia’s popular jazz venue Sarah’s Jazz Club with musicians from all around the island set to take the stage as well as some special guests from abroad.

Following a bluesy evening with The Zilla Project on Friday, the weekend will begin with gypsy soul sounds. On Saturday Atys & The Mystics will perform special arrangements of gypsy music. The songs the five-piece band will play derive from the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and the Balkans and so their passionate set includes songs played in French, Spanish, Greek, Serbian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian Russian, Turkish, and English.

“Expect elements of tango, jazz improvisation and traditional world music, unified by a gypsy pulse,” say the organisers.

On May 10 and 11 the club will welcome Grammy award-winning guitarist Mark Whitfield and world-renowned drummer Joe Farnsworth. The two musicians, along with Ari Roland, will travel from New York to perform twice at the club alongside Cypriot saxophonist Charis Ioannou before their Limassol concert on May 12.

More jazz will follow as George Kalopedis performs with his exceptional quartet on May 13, playing some all-time classics. Along with Loukas Louka on piano, Costas Challoumas on bass and Kris Grecian on drums, the quartet will cover the best in soul, jazz, funk and blues.

The following evening will feature miss Jazz Club herself as Sarah Fenwick takes the stage with her quartet. With Challoumas, Demetris Miaris and Marios Spyrou, the quartet will perform renditions of classic jazz pieces and songs from Sarahs latest album Freedom Groove in an evening titled We’ll Have Manhattan.
