Exhibition puts focus on contemporary urban living

soft spot

Digital, visual, online, offline, contemporary life these days is filled with these things. An overload of images, videos and information is consumed daily and it seems that everyone is simply trying to keep their head above the water. A new art exhibition by Ria Alexandrou opening in Limassol on Friday takes a look at all of the sensory cues of contemporary urban living.

“The pace of the world has become faster,” say the organisers of the Soft Spot exhibition at eins gallery. “The images we experience on a day-to-day have no bounds. Our sensory overload is euphoric, our urban spaces domesticated and constantly on view. Encompassing one more space, one more reality, to what extent can we expand or transmute the meaning of lived experiences, those of touch and friction? Can the Proustian moment– otherwise a sensory déjà vu– continue to catch us by surprise?”

The exhibition launches on Friday with a 6pm opening event and will remain at the Limassol gallery until October 8. There artist Alexandrou invites visitors to observe the norms of today’s life and contemplate all that our senses take in.

“Soft Spot,” add the organisers, “begins to encircle these metaphysical questions and experiences. In the form of wall and ceiling hung tapestries, the works in Soft Spot embrace the noise of contemporary urban living in sensory frames that have no full stop.”
