Avignon: Provence’s seat of the popes and scene of the arts

In this video, we take a pre-Covid trip to the beautiful Provençal town of Avignon in southeast France, which, in the early Middle Ages, served as the capital of the Catholic Church.

While its status as the seat of papal power only lasted a few decades, its architecture, most notably the impressive, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes, allows it an enduring place in ecclesiastical history.

Today, the rampart-ringed old town, with its medieval bridge, leafy squares and outstanding restaurants, is celebrated for hosting the renowned Festival d’Avignon, making it, each July, ‘the’ place to be in Provence.
