Mapping the music of migration

The greatest tool for cross-cultural relations, tales and human connections may well be music and that is exactly what a two-year Erasmus+ musical inheritance programme has focused on. Titled Mapping the music of migration, the project focused on talking about music and song as a tool for intercultural competency and now an event full of music, storytelling and discussions is coming to Nicosia soon presenting its results.

MaMuMi, the project’s acronym, involves the collection, editing and uploading of what is known as Song Stories – stories about music – to an interactive app. These stories focus on inheritance tracks, meaning the songs or music that migrants have inherited and the discussion of which acts as a platform for diversity awareness.

A multiplier event on October 20 at Yfantourgeio TheWorkplace aims to present the main results of the project, talk about music as a tool for intercultural dialogue and conduct the Song Stories Workshop with participants. Held between 5pm and 9pm, the event is open for all but especially addressed to migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, educational and training providers, migrant associations, NGOs, charities, social workers, case workers, musicians, trainers, music educators, storytellers and the general public.

A presentation by the organisers, the Centre for Social Innovation – CSI Cyprus, will open the event before musician and EU project manager at CSI Vangelis Gettos will briefly address storytelling about music as a positive mechanism to counter negative stereotypes and to open up enabling enunciative spaces. Then MaMuMi results will be presented followed by a discussion and a Q&A. After a short coffee break, a workshop on the project’s Song Stories will take place before ending the evening with a live music performance by afro bongo jammers.
