Paphos municipality on Thursday announced initiatives in the fight against drug addiction to take place in June.

According to the announcement, on the occasion of international day against drugs, on June 26, several organisations have banded together to educate the public and raise awareness about the issue.

Representatives of “Exelixis”, an organisation for safeguarding mental health through preventive means, will host a water polo tournament on June 24, at the municipal baths.

Program officers will be onsite from 11.00 am, offering information on addictive substances and treatment programs, using material from the Cyprus Addiction Treatment authority.

Additionally, throughout the rest of June, in collaboration with the Paphos Nautical Club, APOP and the Atlas Association, the municipality will organise experiential workshops for children in summer schools.

The goal of the initiative is to inform parents as well as youth about root causes of addiction with the aim of eliminating them.

“The municipality of Paphos attaches special importance to offering creative outlets to young people, which is why it supports and promotes sports, culture and other areas that cultivate the body and spirit and broaden [their] horisons,” the announcement concludes.
