Review: Hobo café bar, Paphos

By Bejay Browne

Hobo café in Kato Paphos is in the ideal location. Found in the harbour area of Kato Paphos with great views of the castle and the sea, Hobo is a great place to meet friends for a drink.
There is also ample parking close by, which is an added bonus and the outdoor seating area is usually buzzing with both locals and visitors.

The building itself is a converted old customs building and although the location easily finds its way into the top ten best spots in Paphos, the service can sometimes be indifferent and slow.

Having said that, staff are generally friendly and welcoming and prices are reasonable – taking into consideration the venues location.
There are often special offers on drinks and snacks available, and discount vouchers of 20 per cent off (valid for a specific period of time) are often given by the café to entice people back.
But, one can’t help feeling that if the service and food – it’s served all day – were improved no gimmicks would be required to ensure customers returned.

Hobo is an excellent venue to relax and soak up the atmosphere of Paphos. Found next to En Plo gallery, the café is handy to visit before or after wandering around any current exhibitions. The mosaics, ancient odeon and other sightseeing favourites, including the lighthouse, are all close by.

Some of the outdoor tables are old and in need of repair but – according to staff – new outdoor furniture is on its way. There is a good amount of shade and the café has a choice of outdoor seating available on both sides of the coastal promenade, depending on how close you want to sit to the sea. This is a good place to bring children during the daytime, as ice creams are delicious and there is also a kids menu.

During the evening, the atmosphere changes and Hobo becomes more ‘romantic’ – with the perfect setting of Paphos castle lit up as a backdrop. The sound of the sea lapping against the moored vessels is comforting and all sorts of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages are on offer. Homemade lemonade is refreshing and cocktails are a specialty and delicious. The smoothies are worth a try too.

If you enjoy sitting in a prime position to watch the world go by and enjoy a beverage or a simple meal, Hobo is worth a visit.
