Police arrest cocaine suspect (updated)

Police on Thursday arrested a 47-year-old Greek man in connection with possession of around 4.4 kilograms of cocaine.

The man was arrested at Larnaca airport at around 7pm upon arrival from Athens.

On Friday, he was remanded in custody for seven days.

Police said customs and drug squad officers found four packages containing 4.439 kilograms of cocaine in his luggage.

The man was last in picking up his luggage and appeared to hesitate, drawing the attention of drug squad officers.

He later told officers that he was paid €3,000 to bring the drugs to Cyprus and that he accepted because he was having financial problems.

Police said they were checking footage from the airport’s security cameras to locate possible collaborators.

The same was expected to be done by Greek authorities.
