Syrian refugee found dead near presidential palace

A 25-YEAR-OLD Syrian refugee was found dead in a park near the presidential palace in Nicosia on Friday, police said.

The refugee was among those rescued from a sinking ship off the coast of Cyprus last September. According to Nicosia police commissioner Dimitris Dimitriou the 25-year-old left his current home at the Kokkinotrimithia camp on Wednesday and was never seen again. His mother and two brothers reported the 25-year-old as missing.

He was found hanged in the park by members of the Civil Defence on Friday morning. While initial reports said that the man’s hands were bound, state pathologist Sofoklis Sofokleous said that at a first glance “this doesn’t appear to be a crime”.

Sigmalive reported – citing unspecified sources – that police had asked the man to testify against the four crew members that allegedly organised the perilous trip.
