Tonight the Diatopos Centre of Contemporary Art in Nicosia will present a solo drawing exhibition entitled Braid Bound by Savella Michael.
The pieces that make up the collection, which will be displayed until March 28, took almost three years to complete.
During this creative period Michael went through two phases. The first saw her working with small and large scale black and white drawings. These creations show braids and buns set in different moods and contexts.
The second phase took Michael into a different direction and the outcome of the artistic journey was an array of drawings in, what looks like, a drawing book.
Each drawing is a page which tells a different tale and each page together combines the stories to illustrate a large tapestry of narrative achievements.
Girls’ pony tails fly in disarray, some at violent speed and high impact, while others, symmetrically parading into what might be compared to Alice’s descent down the rabbit hole and into her wonderland.
The drawings are not all that will be on show, the exhibition will also host a video presentation in which the artist’s fingers are seen in the lower right hand corner, turning the pages of her drawing book.
The stories are told in silence but the bold images create a slow and reflective movement.
