Filipino woman dies after fall attempting to evade immigration check

A 27-year-old Filipino woman died from injuries suffered during a fall in Nicosia while trying to evade police, reports said on Saturday.

The woman, who lived in a five-storey building on Trikoupis Street in the old town of Nicosia, had tried to evade a police check on Friday evening by jumping into an adjacent flat through a lightwell.

Police had checked her male flatmate’s papers, which turned out to be okay.

The man claimed he lived alone but it appears the woman had tried to access the flat next door on the fifth floor through the bathroom window.

She was trying to avoid police because her visa had expired, reports said.

The woman fell and suffered severe injuries and was noticed after the police had left the building and her flatmate went looking for her.

She was rushed to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery but died on Saturday morning.
