Minister says landfills to close under proposal headed to cabinet

A proposal will be submitted to the cabinet by the end of October on waste management, that will see the closure of the landfills in Vati and Kotsiatis, Agriculture Minister Nicos Kouyialis said.

Speaking after a meeting with affected communities in Nicosia on Friday, the minister stressed that the European Union forbids the uncontrolled landfilling of household waste therefore requiring Cyprus to close them down.

The strategy being prepared will also include works that need to be done to allow the island to properly manage its waste according to European regulations.

In 2013 the European Commission gave Cyprus a two year deadline to shut down the two landfills that were supposed to close in 2009.

It had agreed then, to operate two new waste disposal units in Nicosia and Limassol and shut down the Vati and Kotsiati landfills by the end of 2015.

Although it wasn’t fined, the commission was waiting on seeing Cyprus take action on the matter.
