Hope expressed through art

The Diachroniki gallery in Nicosia will open the solo exhibition A Glimmer of Hope by Syrian artist Alex Khattab tomorrow.

As the small gallery in a side alley of Ledra Street with lots of character often takes in artwork connected with hard times, human suffering and historical events, it is the perfect place to display this body of work.

The paintings by Khattab are a tribute to the victims of war and conflict. The faces within are somewhat tranquil, as if they can suffer no longer and their only hope is for peace and a better life. With this work the artist also wants to comment on the violence of war and its soul destroying effect on innocent children, women and old people.

Khattab was born Nawa, a city in Southern Syria. He is married to a Greek Cypriot, and since 1992 he has been living and working in Cyprus.

He studied Fine Arts at the University of Damascus.

He worked in Syria as an Art Teacher where he had four solo and numerous group exhibitions. These exhibitions were followed by one in Egypt 1993, and ten in Cyprus.
