Girl power

The wind-down to the week will be coming at all of you in Paphos with an all-girl traditional musical performance by the local band Korasies.

The girls will be the first performers of the summer season to take their act on the open-air stage in the Technopolis 20 Cultural Centre’s garden.

Natasa Kafalia will play the lute, Keterina will sing, Marianna Moumtzi will play the qanun while Maria Savva on the percussion will complete the quartet.

Together they will present songs from Cyprus and different parts of Greece, such as Asia Minor, Thrace, Crete and the Aegean. Some of the songs are well known and some not so much, giving us a chance to travel back to a more innocent time and perhaps discover melodies that sing to us on another level.

The four girls who make up Korasies (girls) have always had a love and interest for traditional music. This love brought them together and after attending traditional dance lessons at the Ayii Omologites Cultural Centre in Nicosia, they formed this traditional band. Wanting to share their passion with all of us, they made their first musical appearance together in November last year.

Their love of traditional music is truly contagious.
