Woman fined over €3,000 for possession of illegal tobacco

Authorities on Monday confiscated 11.5 kilos of tobacco located in the house of a woman in Nicosia and for which was believed no tax had been paid.

According to the customs office, police, following a search at the woman’s house, found 46 boxes containing packages of roll your own tobacco, Old Holborn brand.

Due to the fact that the tobacco packaging did not depict health warnings in both Greek and Turkish, they deduced the tobacco had not been purchased legally in the government-controlled areas. The quantity found would have been subject to tax amounting to €2,400.

The case was closed after the woman paid €3,300, while the tobacco was confiscated by customs.
