Opera on the big screen

Some of opera’s greatest stars will be brought to the cinema screen in Cyprus on Saturday with a performance of the Metropolitan Opera live in high definition, part of a series of ten spectacular productions.

The Metropolitan Opera is a vibrant home for the most creative and talented signers, conductors, composers, musicians, stage directors, designers, visual artists, choreographers and dancers from around the world.

It was created in 1883 by a group of wealthy businessmen who wanted their own theatre. During the company’s early years, the management changed course several times, first performing everything in Italian, then everything in German, before settling into a policy of performing most works in their original language, with some notable exceptions.

Starting in 1977, the Met began showcasing a regular series of televised productions with a performance of La Boheme, a production which was viewed by more than four million people on public television. Over the following decades, more than 70 performances have been made available to a huge audience around the world. Many of these performances have been issued on video, laserdisc and DVD.

The first performance to be screened by K Cineplex will be that of Samson et Dalida – a biblical epic starring Elina Garanca and Roberto Alagna in the title roles. Laurent Naouri co-stars as the High Priest, with Elchin Azizov as the Philistine King Abimelech and Dmitry Belosselskiy as the Old Hebrew.

Samson et Dalida
Screening of Met Live performance. October 20, 7:55pm at K-Cineplex in Larnaca, Nicosia, Paphos and Limassol
