Akinci expects Anastasiades to come with proposals

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci hopes president Anastasiades will not arrive empty handed at their meeting scheduled for the end of February.

In a written statement after the two leaders communicated by phone on Wednesday to schedule the upcoming meeting, Akinci’s spokesman Baris Burcu said the Turkish Cypriot leader expects Anastasiades to bring proposals to the table.

Burcu reiterated that the two leaders agreed to meet in the last week of February.

According to Turkish Cypriot media, Burcu said that Akinci had made clear during the phone call that he expects Anastasiades to come ready to propose his ideas regarding decentralisation, with the Greek Cypriot leader assuring Akinci that he will arrive at the meeting prepared.

For the laying down of terms of reference of a potential new round of talks, Burcu noted that the UN envoy Jane Holl Lute must first complete her rounds of talks, as visits to the guarantor powers are still pending, so that it can become clear whether common ground exists.
