Man charged with driving under influence of drugs and drink

Police have charged a man for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in the Famagusta region.

At around 2am on Wednesday, officers signalled a car to stop for a routine check in Ayia Napa.

The 22-year-old driver failed to stop but was soon caught.

When he was tested for alcohol the reading showed 56mg, more than six times the legal limit which is 9mg for drivers who have had a licence for less than three years.

He was arrested and taken to a local police station where a narcotest confirmed that he was also under the influence of drugs.

The man was released at around 5am after he was charged.

A little earlier, 15 minutes after midnight, traffic police stopped a driver on the Ayia Napa – Larnaca motorway near Ayia Napa. He had been travelling at a speed of 182km/h instead of the allowed 100km/h.

The 24-year-old man driving the vehicle was arrested, charged and released pending his appearance in court.
