Child commissioner takes on rap challenge (with video)

Child protection commissioner Despo Michaelidou in the studio

Child protection commissioner Despo Michaelidou briefly turned rapper to give a musical send off to #The Right Challenge initiative that aimed to keep youngsters creatively occupied at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

The commissioner has now posted a video of the song “The best day” online, together with her thanks to all those who made it possible.

“The lockdown was a huge challenge for all of us. We found ourselves facing an unprecedented situation that we needed to manage. So, with my associates, we decided to create a new challenge for all of you so as to exchange ideas for creative occupation at home on social media,” she said on Monday.

She had promised that at the end of the challenge, she would sing some rap, a form of music she was not familiar with.

United by a shared faith in human rights and dignity, she, colleagues, and others of different ages and different backgrounds joined in. Thirty people, equal to the number of years since the adoption of the UN charter on the rights of the child, turned the challenge of rap into an opportunity and a thank you to all the professionals and front line workers as well as all those who went unnoticed but contributed to efforts to contain the pandemic.

Recorded at Studio Suite 16, lyrics are by Stavros Stavrou and music by Andreas Michalopoulos.

The video can be found on:

The commissioner can be heard rapping towards the end of the three-minute song (2.36).
