The interior spaces of Manet, Degas, Bonnard and Vuillard

Drawing on their own lockdown realities, art critic Alastair Sooke and Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art department co-chairman Giovanna Bertazzoni discuss interior spaces in works by French Impressionist artists Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Jean-Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard.

Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement characterised by small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities, ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles.

The development of Impressionism in the visual arts was soon followed by analogous styles in other media that became known as impressionist music and impressionist literature.
