Heatstroke in dogs: five emergency cool-down steps

Every pet deserves a loving and respectful home: please only consider acquiring a pet if you will be able to take care of its long-term needs. Also, consider choosing your animal companion from a shelter, where there are so many wonderful furry friends who need a forever home.

In this second of a two-part video series, veterinarian Dr. Alex Avery teaches us five steps to quickly cool down our dog, if we suspect they are suffering from heatstroke – ahead of rushing them to the vet.

Heatstroke in dogs can be a rapid killer, and it doesn’t even need to be that hot outside. A warm spring day can be just as risky as a hot summer one if our dog has not had time to adapt and become acclimatised.

So, by learning how to cool our pooch down quickly, the chance of death is greatly reduced. Of course, dong so is not the end of their care. Heatstroke can cause multi-organ failure, so getting our dog to the vet quickly is a key step to ensuring their survival.
