The leadership of main opposition party Akel is determined to reorganise and regain its strength it said after a meeting of its central committee following a disappointing outcome in last Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

The committee met on Saturday night to discuss the outcome of the elections – the party got 22.3 per cent of the vote last Sunday, 3.3 percentage points down on 2016, and lost one seat – and its party congress to be held at the beginning of July, which will decide how to move forward in addition to electing a new leader.

Part of Saturday’s discussion was how the party could rebuild itself, an announcement said.

“During the discussion the leadership showed its determination to confront today’s trial and to move Akel forwards,” the announcement said. “To revitalise its commitments to the public and the workers. To strengthen its intervention and effectiveness within Cyprus society. Society needs a strong Akel, a strong Left, strength and hope for the country and its people”.

Discussions with people inside and outside the party will continue over the coming days the party said and conclude with a decisions on the way forward at the party congress to be held from July 2 to 4.
